Trenches and Drones: William Aaron Turner's Second Whitepaper Treats Network Defense as a War of Attrition

Infinitum Corporation releases Whitepaper No. 2, Trenches and Drones, a free guide for mid-size organizations defending networks against persistent, automated, low-cost pressure. Infinitum Corporation today released "Trenches and Drones: Network Defense for a War of Attrition," the second paper in its free whitepaper series, written by William Aaron Turner, Founder & President.

The paper starts from a plain observation: defending a network is not one big battle but a long grind of small, cheap and constant pressure. Scans that never stop, phishing waves that arrive in bursts, short floods of junk traffic and edge devices left waiting weeks for a patch all wear a defender down. Turner argues that the side that can absorb losses, repair, adapt and keep operating is the side that outlasts the other.

To make that practical, the paper reads network defense through the picture public analysts paint of the modern battlefield, which Turner summarizes as trench-style grind fused with science fiction. It walks through five fronts and pairs each battlefield feature with its equivalent on a corporate network: depth, through segmentation and identity checks at every line, with the implicit trust zone kept as small as possible as NIST SP 800-207 recommends; cheap mass, through automation that keeps the cost of defense below the cost of attack; electronic warfare, through resilience against spoofed and degraded signals; sensors, through logging and detection; and supply lines, through software and vendor risk.

The paper is written for mid-size organizations. It closes with seven recommended moves, a 30/60/90-day plan, a 12-month roadmap, a 30-item self-assessment and a scorecard, and it includes three clearly labeled hypothetical scenarios.

Turner is explicit about the limits of the comparison. The paper draws general lessons about technology and conflict from public sources such as CSIS, takes no side, makes no claim about any party and leaves out casualty, loss and performance figures for every side. "Nobody is shooting at your servers," the paper says.

Trenches and Drones follows Whitepaper No. 1, "Dead Reckoning: AI for Security Operations." Turner coined the term Corporate Cognitive Warfare, the discipline of competing for perception lawfully and defending against narrative attacks.

"Attrition is the right word for what security teams face. The question is not whether you will be hit, it is whether you can absorb it, repair and keep operating. Every lesson in this paper comes back to a decision a team can make on Monday." said William Aaron Turner, Founder & President of Infinitum Corporation.
